Please submit a single PDF file containing a cover letter, a 1 or 2 page research statement describing your research interests, qualifications, and professional ambitions, a curriculum vitae, reprints for up to three representative publications, and contact information for at least three references. In your research statement, please describe why you’re excited about our research and what biological questions you would like to pursue in our lab. Applicants with an interest in careers with a significant teaching component are strongly encouraged to apply for the UAB MERIT Scholars program.
The Gray lab is affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Microbiology and the UAB Graduate Biomedical Science (GBS) Program. Note that admission to this program is competitive and each program has a limited number of open slots. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the appropriate deadlines. Please apply to the GBS Program and note your interest in the Gray lab in your application. You should also contact Dr. Gray directly via e-mail if you are interested in joining our lab for your thesis research.
Mentoring graduate students is an extremely high priority for us, and is key to both your success and the success of the lab. Please read this detailed description of the expectations for and responsibilities of graduate students in the Gray lab.
We strongly encourage undergraduate student participation in our research program. Please read Dr. Gray’s teaching philosophy. Interested students should submit an unofficial transcript, a description of their planned course work, and a 1-2 paragraph statement explaining why they would like to perform research in the Gray lab. Preference is given to enthusiastic and motivated students who can commit at least two full years to research and/or are enrolled in an Honors Program.
